The Walla Walla Symphony’s 2024-25 season, themed “Roots and Horizons,” explores the connection between tradition and new perspectives with music director and conductor Dina Gilbert. The opening concert on October 8th, “Tides and Tales,” pairs fresh water-inspired works with Rimsky-Korsakov’s vibrant Scheherazade, drawing from the symphony’s roots in storytelling. The concert will also premiere works by two young SPARK! Composition Course students, showcasing the next generation of talent.
Throughout the season, the symphony will welcome world-renowned artists such as Time for Three, Canadian Brass, and tabla player Sandeep Das — each known for captivating performances and genre-crossing creativity. From energetic string trio concerts to brass masterpieces and rhythmic tabla beats, these guest artists will bring diverse musical experiences to the Cordiner Hall stage.
The season theme continues with “Blue Mountains.” This concert will feature Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, performed by Washington native pianist Stephen Beus, along with Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain Suite, co-commissioned by the Walla Walla Symphony.
In March, “Alma and Gustav” will blend music and visual storytelling, featuring illustrations that illuminate Alma Mahler’s life, along with her lieder and a reduced version of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.
In May, “Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire” will close the season with Stravinsky’s powerful Firebird Suite.
