The Capitol Theatre in Yakima will present the award-winning Shrek the Musical on Nov. 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m.
When it was published in 1990, the comedy picture book by William Steig turned all of the standard fairy-tale tropes on their ears. The lead character is the monster. The princess is ugly. The sidekick is obnoxious. The characters poop and pee, and use colorful language. It’s as real as a fairy tale can be with relatable characters.
It was DreamWorks that ultimately purchased the rights and produced the animated film version in 2001, winning the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The musical adaptation premiered in 2008 and ran on Broadway for more than a year, followed by productions in London’s West End and both national and international tours.
The 2008 pre-Broadway tryout for Shrek the Musical was at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in Seattle, and a 2011 tour began with a pre-tour tech rehearsal at Yakima’s Capitol Theatre.
