Walla Walla’s First Railroad to be Celebrated

The first locomotive steamed into Walla Walla 150 years ago, marking the beginning of a new era of connection, commerce and community growth. This pivotal moment transformed the area.

The Rawhide Railroad, led by local visionary and entrepreneur Dr. D.S. Baker, turned Walla Walla’s wheat into a global commodity and helped establish the region as an agricultural powerhouse. Baker’s legacy of bold thinking endures today.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, the Fort Walla Walla Museum will bring that history to life with a free and family-friendly day of discovery, storytelling and celebration sponsored by Baker Boyer Bank. You’ll be able to explore the only surviving locomotive from the Rawhide Railroad. Visit fwwm.org for more information.
