Matchboxes, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters and more will fill the stage at Yakima’s Capitol Theatre on Nov. 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. The musical sensation STOMP features energizing dance, music, and theatrical performances blended into an invigorating and electrifying show.
STOMP took the world by storm in the 1990s. Its worldwide popularity is distinct and extraordinary, but most people know little about its origin or its creators. Two boys from Brighton, England — Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas — worked together as members of a street band. The ensemble’s success led to a highly acclaimed commercial for Heineken lager featuring a piece called “Bins,” written and choreographed by Cresswell. It became the basis for the trash-can dance that is a signature part of STOMP.
After several years of further collaboration, the two men premiered STOMP at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, winning a Best of Fringe award. That premiere jump-started a series of successes that have led to decades of non-stop performances at festivals, in concert halls, and on television and film.
