The Chief Joseph Days Rodeo celebrates its 80th anniversary July 21–26 in the heart of the Wallowa Mountains in Joseph, Ore. Recognized as one of the Northwest’s premier PRCA rodeos, Chief Joseph Days has become a summer tradition for generations of rodeo fans, families, and visitors from across the country.
Festivities begin on Tuesday, July 21, as bucking horses thunder down Main Street during the Bucking Horse Stampede, launching six unforgettable days of Western tradition, entertainment and rodeo action in the small mountain town of Joseph.
The rodeo performances begin Wednesday, July 22, and run through Saturday night, featuring many of the top professional rodeo contestants competing in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, tie-down roping and team roping. Friday and Saturday nights routinely sell out, creating an electric atmosphere under the lights at the Harley Tucker Memorial Arena.
Legendary entertainer John Payne, known nationwide as “The One-Armed Bandit,” is this year’s specialty act. Payne’s daring performances that feature bison, mules, comedy and crowd interaction have made him a fan favorite across the country and earned him multiple awards for PRCA Specialty Act of the Year.
You can also enjoy the Buckaroo Rodeo for special-needs participants, the Chief Joseph Days parades through downtown Joseph, and after-parties in the Thunder Room featuring live music and dancing. On Wednesday night the Thunder Room will host Family Night with a bounce house, a mechanical bull and activities for all ages.
Live music from Slade Coulter will be featured on Thursday night, the Teague Brothers Band on Friday night, and Pendleton favorite Scotty Wilson on Saturday night.
